South Ripley got past Oldenburg Academy 1-nil in boys soccer action at the Graveyard on Tuesday. The Raiders’ Bryson Sipples scored the game’s lone goal in the first half. The Twisters outshot the Raiders 16-12, but couldn’t get anything past South Ripley goalie Thomas Eaglin, who had eight saves. Ryan Hautman also recorded saves in goal for OA.
North Decatur swept South Decatur in the Civil War volleyball matchup. Scores were 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 in favor of the Chargers.
Batesville traveled to Connersville for a middle school cross country dual meet. The Spartans won the boys race 29-30, while the Bulldogs took the girls meet 17-45. BMS’ Ana Shane was the girls meet champion.
Both the Greensburg boys and girls finished second in a tri-meet at East Central with Franklin County. The host Trojans won both races, followed by the Pirates and Wildcats. Greensburg’s Maria Scholle won the girls race with an individual time of 11:57.
The Reds doubled up the Padres 4-2 in San Diego in a game heard late last night on WRBI. Tyler Stephenson’s two-run homer to left field off Padres closer Robert Suarez lifted the Reds to the win. Cincinnati also got home runs off the bats of Sal Stewart and Will Benson. Connor Phillips got the win in relief while Suarez, who leads the National League in saves, took the loss. Emilio Pagan notched his 27th save. With the win, the Reds move to within three games of the Mets in the NL Wild Card race after New York lost at Philadelphia last night. The rubber match of the Reds-Padres series is tonight. Lefthander Andrew Abbott gets the start for the Reds. He’ll be opposed by righthander Nick Pivetta. Coverage begins at 8:10 on 103.9 FM.
The Indiana Fever knocked off the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx 83-72 in the regular season finale last night in downtown Indianapolis. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with a game-high 18 points. A big difference in the game was three-point shooting. The Fever made nine of 19 three-point shots while the Lynx only made two of their 20 three-point attempts. Five players for Indiana finished in double figure scoring. Aliyah Boston had 12 points and eight rebounds, breaking her own Fever record for rebounds in a season with 361. Mitchell became the franchise’s all-time single season leader in points per game, breaking a record held for more than two decades and set in 2003 by Tamika Catchings with 19.7 points per game. Mitchell now holds that record at 20.2 points per game, the first player in Fever history to average over 20 points in a season. With a record of 24-20 to conclude the regular season, the Fever set a franchise record for most wins in a season. Indiana begins postseason play on Sunday. The Indianapolis Colts are hoping to ride this small wave of success to start off the 2025 season. They face the Denver Broncos on Sunday after beating the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. Both offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo say the Broncos will pose some unique challenges. The Colts are looking to go 2-0 to start a season for the first time since the 2009 season. Kickoff Sunday is at 4:05 p.m.
Purdue football coach Barry Odom will be go up against a familiar face this weekend at Ross-Ade Stadium. Purdue will host USC to open Big Ten play, and the Trojans are quarterbacked by Jayden Maiava, was the quarterback for UNLV when Odom was head coach there. Purdue has not been 3-0 to start a college football season since 1999. Kickoff this Saturday at 3:30.
The Ball State Cardinals have taken beatings from the likes of Purdue and Auburn to start the season, but will get to play in front of the home crowd for the first time on Saturday when they take on New Hampshire at Schuman Stadium.
