Batesville boys tennis went on the road and served up a commanding 5-love victory over Centerville on Saturday. The Bulldogs won at all positions in straight sets. BHS improves to 4-2.

Batesville placed eighth in the 21-team Indiana Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame Invitational on Saturday at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin. Individually, Bulldog senior Ava South shot a 3 over par 75 and tied for eighth.

In high school cross country, Batesville had a terrific day at the 20-plus-team Rushville Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldog girls came in first with 20 points; the boys team finished third with 98. Twenty of 31 Batesville runners achieved personal best times at the event.

The Reds knocked off the St. Cardinals 7-4 in downtown Cincinnati to salvage the series finale heard yesterday on WRBI. Cincinnati ends a five-game losing streak with the win. Austin Hays’ two-run homer in the 5th inning snapped a 3-all tie. Hays went 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice. Ke’Bryan Hayes and TJ Friedl also drove in two runs. Matt McLain clubbed his 13th home run of the season in the 8th. It’s the second straight game in which McLain has gone deep. Brady Singer was outstanding on the mound. He gave up five hits, three earned runs, and struck out eight over six innings and got the win. Singer’s record goes to 12-9. Emilio Pagan notched his 26th save. Five Reds pitchers combined to strike out 15 hitters. They also did not issue a walk. The homestand continues this afternoon when the Reds open a three-game interleague series against the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. Hunter Greene starts for the Reds. The Blue Jays counter with righthander Chris Bassitt. Coverage begins at 12:40 on 103.9 FM.

The Golden State Valkyries beat the Indiana Fever 75-63 in WNBA action last night. Aerial Powers led Indiana with 17 points. Kelsey Mitchell added 14 in the loss, which drops the Fever to 21-19. Indiana will be back on the court tomorrow night at Phoenix.

In college football, Miami of Florida got past Notre Dame 27-24. The 0-1 Fighting Irish have next weekend off before welcoming Texas A & M to South Bend for the home opener on September 13.

Josef Newgarden took the checkered flag at the IndyCar season finale at Nashville. It’s Newgarden’s only win on the circuit this year.
