Oldenburg Academy outlasted Switzerland County 1-Nil in extra time in first round action last night at the Rising Sun girls soccer sectional, in a match heard on WRBI. The Twisters’ Olivia Leising found the back of the net for the lone goal of the contest at 1:41 of extra time. OA takes on Milan in second round play tomorrow night.

Elsewhere, it was Batesville over Rushville 9-Nil, and East Central clobbered Richmond 12-Nil.

In boys soccer sectional play, East Central eliminated Franklin Community 3-Nil.

Coming up tonight, it’s Franklin County vs. Greensburg in girls’ soccer sectional action at Batesville. WRBI coverage begins at 7:00 with Terrance Arney on the call.

Fifth-ranked and host Columbus North shut out Batesville 5-0 in the boys tennis regional last night. BHS finishes the season at 12-11.

East Central’s Joel Richter competes tonight in the Columbus North boys tennis regional in #1 singles. Richter is 16-6 on the year heading into tonight’s match.

Congratulations to Kaiya Rinear from South Ripley and Milan’s Gabe Riehle and Cassidy Derico, who garnered top honors in their respective sports in this week’s ORVC Report. Rinear is the volleyball player of the week after compiling 100 % on serves, four aces, 13 kills, six blocks, and 33 digs in three matches. Riehle is the boys cross country runner of the week after recording a time of 16:22 at the Nike Twilight race. And Derico had eight goals and two assists in three matches to net girls soccer player of the week honors.

The Reds have fired all three hitting coaches – Joel McKeithan and assistants Terry Bradshaw and Tim LaMonte – as part of a staff shakeup following the hiring of Terry Francona as manager. Cincinnati finished the 2024 season ranked 26th in the majors with a .231 team batting average and 16th with 699 runs. The Reds had 16 shutout defeats, including four 1-0 losses, and a 15-28 record in one-run games.

In the MLB playoffs, the New York Mets rolled over the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 and the San Diego Padres got past the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5. The Mets and Padres lead their respective best-of-five National League Division Series two games to one and can advance to the League Championship Series with wins tonight.
