Batesville freshman Ava Wade finished 33rd at the IHSAA Cross Country State Meet at Terre Haute on Saturday. Wade crossed the finish line at 18:26, which was the fastest time in the state among 9th grade girls. Greensburg freshman Eleanor Davis finished at 18:57. East Central senior Callie Bentley clocked in at 19:15 in her fourth and final appearance at the state meet. Bentley is the only EC runner to take part in four state finals meets. Greensburg senior Joe Hawkins finished the boys race with a time of 16:39.
Batesville boys 7th and 8th grade basketball started their seasons on Saturday by winning the South Ripley Invitational championship in each grade. The 8th grade Bulldogs started the day with a 31-15 win over Jac-Cen-Del, before besting the host Raiders in the title game, 33-23. The Batesville 7th grade squad topped JCD 45-13, before overwhelming the Greensburg Pirates 44-16.

In NFL action yesterday, Caleb Williams’ 58-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Colston Loveland with 17 seconds remaining in the game lifted the Chicago Bears over the Cincinnati Bengals 47-42 in a wild one at Paycor Stadium. The Bengals recovered an onside kick, and Joe Flacco threw a nine-yard TD pass to Andrei Iosivas gave the Bengals the 42-41 lead after trailing by 15 points with under two minutes left. But Williams hit Loveland a few plays later with what turned out to be the game-winning score. Flacco threw for a career-high 470 yards, the third most in Bengals history, with four touchdowns and two interceptions. The Bengals drop to 3-6 heading into the bye week.
The Bengals announced on Sunday the passing of former tight end Bob Trumpy. The two-time Pro Bowler played for the team from its inaugural season in 1968 through 1977. After his playing career ended, Trumpy went on to host sports talk shows on two Cincinnati radio stations and moved into the broadcast booth for NBC where he served as an NFL and golf analyst. He called four Super Bowls, three Ryder Cups and three Olympics for NBC. Bob Trumpy was 80 years old.
The Pittsburgh Steelers held off the Indianapolis Colts 27-20 in the Steel City. Six turnovers doomed the Colts. Daniel Jones threw for 342 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. Jonathan Taylor was held to 45 rushing yards and did not score. Alec Pierce and Michael Pittman, Jr. had 115 receiving yards a piece. With the loss, the Colts fall to 7-2.
The 1-5 Indiana Pacers take on the Milwaukee Bucks in NBA action tonight in downtown Indianapolis. It marks the return of former Pacer Myles Turner, who signed a free agent contract with the Central Division-rival Bucks shortly after Indiana’s appearance in the NBA Finals. WRBI Coverage begins at 7:00 following Coaches Corner.
Ke’Bryan Hayes of the Cincinnati Reds is this year’s recipient of the National League Gold Glove Award at third base. This marks Hayes’ second career Gold Glove Award, the other coming with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023. Spencer Steer was also named a finalist for the honor among National League first basemen, but was not selected as a winner. Hayes joins Scott Rolen (2010) as the only Reds third basemen to ever win a Gold Glove Award, which was first presented in 1958. He also becomes the 22nd Red to earn the honor at any position, and the first since catcher Tucker Barnhart in 2020. Hayes, who was acquired by the Reds from the Pirates on July 29, appeared at third base in each of his 152 games (146 starts) this season, where he committed just five errors in 396 total chances across 1,283.0 innings.
The Reds have sent infielder Santiago Espinal and relief pitcher Ian Gibaut outright to Triple-A Louisville. With these moves, Espinal and Gibaut are removed from the 40-man roster. Both players, who were arbitration-eligible before being removed from the roster, have the right to reject the outright assignment and elect free agency.
Many college football teams will be paying attention to the reveal of the first College Football Playoff rankings tomorrow. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Indiana Hoosiers will be among them. Indiana is #2 in the latest AP Poll, and Notre Dame has moved up to #10. The Hoosiers pummeled Maryland 55-10 on Saturday. Notre Dame beat Boston College 25-10. UC fell to the 25th spot in the rankings after being boat raced 45-14 at Utah Saturday night.
