Batesville nipped Madison 2-1 in varsity baseball on Friday. Cayden Drake drove home the Bulldogs’ two runs in the second inning. Carson Meyer scattered four hits, had one unearned run, struck out one and did not walk a Cubs hitter. Meyer recorded all 21 outs and earned the win. Batesville improves to 10-3 on the season, and will visit Lawrenceburg tonight, weather permitting.

East Central took first place in both the boys and girls track and field meets at Friday’s EC Invitational. On the boys side, the Trojans edged second place Batesville with 139 points. The Bulldogs had 136, followed by Elder with 96, Lawrenceburg at 71, Franklin County had 58, Greensburg finished with 45, Oldenburg had 40 and Columbus East went home with 36. Batesville’s Jake Chapman set a new meet record in the 1600 with a time of 4:21.53, eclipsing the mark set by Franklin County’s Jeremiah Vaughn in 2008. EC won the girls meet with 140.5; Batesville was second with 124.5; Seton came in third with 84 points followed by Columbus East (76.5), Lawrenceburg (70), Franklin County  (50.5), OA (42) and Greensburg (31).

Batesville boys varsity golf finished second at the 14-team Trinity Lutheran Invitational in Seymour on Saturday. First place Shelbyville got past the Bulldogs 136-137 to win the match. North Decatur came in seventh while Oldenburg finished in the 11th spot.

Greensburg bested North Decatur in a boys golf dual match 161-182 on Friday at Greensburg Country Club. The Pirates also took the JV match 200-206.

Pairings were drawn last evening by the IHSAA for the baseball and softball sectionals. Games sites and pairings for area teams can be found on the Local Sports page of wrbiradio.com.

The Pacers topped the host Cleveland Cavaliers 121-112 in Game One of their Eastern Conference semifinal series as heard last evening on the Sports Voice. Andrew Nembhard led Indiana with 23 points. Tyrese Haliburton added 22 points and 12 assists. Myles Turner contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Pacers lead the series one game to none. Game Two is tomorrow night in Cleveland.

The Washington Nationals beat the Reds 4-1 yesterday afternoon in downtown Cincinnati in a game heard on WRBI. Tyler Stephenson accounted for the Reds only run when he clubbed his first home run of the season bottom of the second. The Nats take two of the three games in the weekend series. Cincinnati finishes the homestand with a 3-4 record. The Reds begin a two-city, seven game road trip tonight with the first of four in Atlanta against the Braves. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 103.9 FM.

Alex Palou took the checkered flag at Indy Car’s Alabama Grand Prix yesterday. Palou has won three of the first four races on the circuit this year. Drivers and teams now turn their attention to the Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, along with qualifying for this month’s Indy 500.
