11:27 a.m. UPDATE: The Batesville boys are headed to the championship game of their Invitational after a 70–60 win over Austin Saturday morning. Three Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Cameron Holcomb’s 28 points, as Batesville rained in shots from deep throughout the game. South Ripley boys basketball split a pair of contests Friday at the Baird Classic at Southridge, opening tournament play with a close win before falling in the nightcap.
The Raiders edged host Southridge 50–48 in their first game of the day, then dropped a 56–48 decision to Bedford North Lawrence later Friday. South Ripley continues tournament play Saturday, facing Forest Park at 4 p.m.
Other Friday hoops involving local high school teams:
Connersville’s boys pulled away late to defeat Oldenburg Academy 60–51, while Oldenburg Academy’s girls cruised past Jac-Cen-Del 73–39. And the Jennings County girls topped Batesville 52–37.
Saturday, South Decatur’s girls travel to Knightstown, East Central’s girls host Bishop Chatard. Franklin County’s boys welcome Oldenburg Academy, and Franklin County’s girls face Triton Central. Tonight, Eastern Hancock visits Saint Leon to take on the East Central boys.
The Indiana Pacers’ struggles continued Friday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where they fell 123–113 to the San Antonio Spurs. Pascal Siakam led Indiana with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Nembhard added 19 points, while Micah Potter scored 16. San Antonio was led by De’Aaron Fox with 24 points. The loss extended the Pacers’ losing streak to 11 games, and drops their record to 6-29 — the worst in the NBA. Indiana returns to their home floor Sunday afternoon against the Houston Rockets. College football wrapped up a full slate of bowl games on Friday.
Texas State pulled away for a 41–10 win over Rice in the Armed Forces Bowl. Navy controlled the Liberty Bowl, defeating the University of Cincinnati Bearcats 35–13. Wake Forest used a strong second half to beat Mississippi State 43–29 in the Mayo Bowl. In the Holiday Bowl, SMU edged Arizona 24–19 in a tightly contested finish.
The NFL regular season concludes this weekend. The Cincinnati Bengals close out the schedule Sunday afternoon at home against the Cleveland Browns. The Indianapolis Colts finish the season on the road at Houston against the Texans.
