The local sports schedule took a hit on Saturday when heavy snow rolled through the area, but a few events took place before the storm hit. Jac-Cen-Del girls basketball fell at New Washington 48-45. And Batesville swimming competed at the Shelbyville Relays. The Bulldog boys finished fifth overall with 72 points. Pendleton Heights captured the team title with 126 points, followed by Mount Vernon (Fortville) with 100 and host Shelbyville with 88.  The Bulldog boys placed fourth in the 800 Freestyle Relay and the 400 Medley Relay, while also earning fourth-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 Freestyle Relays. The team closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The BHS girls placed fourth overall with 68 points. Mount Vernon (Fortville) won the meet with 148 points, followed by Pendleton Heights with 102 and Shelbyville with 84. The Bulldogs earned third-place finishes in the 800 Freestyle Relay, 100 Freestyle Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay. The girls also earned points in the 400 Medley Relay and multiple sprint relay formats.

Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy Saturday night in New York. He is the first Hoosier to win the Heisman. Mendoza led all finalists in first place votes in each geographical region. The other finalists were Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Mendoza will lead the Hoosiers on their second College Football Playoff run in as many years in a couple of weeks. They will face either Alabama or Oklahoma in the CFP quarterfinals to be played at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day. The Crimson Tide and Sooners meet in the CFP first round on Friday.

The Washington Wizards dumped the Indiana Pacers 108-89 in NBA action heard yesterday on the Sports Voice. Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers with 15 points. Indiana dips to 6-20 with the loss at home. The Pacers are off until they host the New York Knicks Thursday night.

The Baltimore Ravens shut out the Cincinnati Bengals 24-0 yesterday at Paycor Stadium in a game that began in 10-degree weather with a minus-one wind chill. Joe Burrow threw for 225 and two interceptions. With the loss, the Bengals fall to 4-10 and are eliminated from playoff contention…

The Seattle Seahawks got past the Indianapolis Colts 18-16. Jason Myers 56 yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining was the game winner for the Seahawks. Phillip Rivers came out of retirement and started at quarterback for the Colts. The 44-year-old grandfather, who played in his first NFL game in five years, was 18 of 27 passing for 120 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Indy falls to 8-6 on the year.
