Batesville girls golf won the eight-team Union County Invitational at Liberty Country Club last night with a 314. East Central’s Rowan Pies earned medalist honors with a four under par 66. Batesville’s Ava South finished second with a three under 67. As a team, East Central came in fourth at 392 while Franklin County was right behind in fifth at 396.

Meanwhile, Batesville opened the season on Monday with a third place finish at the Bloomington South Invitational. The Bulldogs as a team carded a 309. Zoey Ahern led BHS with an even par 71, just one stroke shy of invitational medalist.

East Central, North Decatur and Milan will kick off the upcoming high school football season as ranked teams. The Trojans are ranked 5th in Class 5A by the Indiana Football Coaches Association. The North Decatur Chargers hold down the 4th spot in 1A while the Milan Indians are ranked a few spots from there at #7. The high school football season begins Friday, August 22.

The Reds topped the Chicago Cubs 5-1 in the middle game the series at Wrigley Field as heard last night on WRBI. Zach Littell made his Cincinnati debut and pitched seven innings, gave up three hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out a season-high eight hitters. Littell, who was acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, joins an exclusive club – he’s the fifth Reds pitcher in the last 125 years to toss seven-plus innings, give up one or fewer runs, and strike out eight or more in his team debut.  He joins Brady Singer (March 31), Johnny Cueto (April 3, 2008), Mo Sanford (Aug. 9, 1991) and Tom Seaver (June 18, 1977) in accomplishing that feat. Spencer Steer led the offense by going 2 for 4 with a home run and four driven in. The Reds go for the series sweep this afternoon. Lefthander Andrew Abbott takes his 8-1 record and 2.15 ERA to the mound for Cincinnati. The Cubs go with righthander Cade Horton. Coverage begins at 1:50 on 103.9 FM.

The Reds have placed LHP Nick Lodolo on the 15-day Injured List. Lodolo left Monday night’s series opener in Chicago with a blister on his left index finger. In a corresponding move, the team recalled RHP Yosver Zulueta  from Triple-A Louisville.

The Los Angeles Sparks knocked off the Indiana Fever 100-91 in WNBA action on the West Coast last night. Kelsey Mitchell led scorers with 34 points. The loss snaps Indiana’s five-game winning streak. Caitlin Clark missed her eighth straight game with a groin injury. The Fever’s western road trip concludes tomorrow night in Phoenix when they go up against the Mercury.

Anthony Richardson will be the Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback in the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Richardson says he feels camp has gone well so far and that he feels he has been “practicing and preparing as if he is the starting quarterback.” He says being in that mindset has helped him along. Daniel Jones will also see playing time tomorrow night. Jones will start the second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, says head coach Shane Steichen.

Chemistry is being built by the Purdue Boilermakers. That’s what many of the players are saying as they go through Fall camp in West Lafayette. Pash rusher TJ Lindsey says he is certainly feeling the chemistry with his teammates despite many of them being newcomers to the team. The Boilermakers were 1-and-11 last year, and will hope to have a better season this year as they open at home against Ball State on August 30.

The Indianapolis Indians came up short in their series opener against the Storm Chasers falling 7-6. Matt Fraizer led the way at the plate after going three for five with a pair of runs batted in. The Indians hope to bounce back when they continue their six-game set against Omaha this afternoon.
