Shelbyville Considers Data Center

(Shelbyville, IN) – Shelbyville officials are beginning formal consideration of a large-scale development proposal that would bring a potential data center campus to the east side of the city.

The Shelbyville Common Council is scheduled to consider a first reading of an annexation ordinance during its meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at City Hall. The request involves land located east of the city near the State Road 44 and Interstate 74 interchange.

The proposal comes from Prologis, a California-based real estate developer. Company plans outline a 13-building campus spread across more than 400 acres. The land currently sits outside city limits and is zoned primarily for agricultural and single-family residential use, with some portions already designated for industrial development.

In addition to annexation, the developer is seeking rezoning to a General Industrial classification, a change required for the project to move forward. City materials identify the site as consisting of multiple parcels east of State Road 44.

A public hearing on the request is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, before the Shelbyville Plan Commission at Breck Auditorium at Shelbyville High School. That hearing will allow residents to comment before the commission considers a recommendation.

Prologis has said the site was chosen based on its proximity to the interstate, access to high-voltage electric transmission infrastructure, and the presence of industrial zoning on nearby property. The company has confirmed that no end user or tenant has been identified for the campus at this stage.

City officials have emphasized that Monday’s council action and Wednesday’s hearing represent early steps in the review process. If annexation and rezoning are approved, the project would still require future site plan reviews and additional approvals before any construction could begin.
