Second central Indiana gridder seriously injured during play

Batesville, In. — A second central Indiana high school football has been hospitalized due to a game injury this weekend.

Columbus North High School junior quarterback Trenton Kelley was first hit early in the first quarter in the game at Center Grove. Kelley was hit again two plays later and did not return. Reportedly Kelley suffered a ruptured spleen and underwent surgery Saturday. He was reported to be in stable condition.

Kelley was transported by ambulance to Community South Hospital then transferred to I.U. Methodist Hospital.

In early October a Switzerland County High School football player suffered vertebrae fractures during a game with North Decatur High School. Colton Shirmer underwent surgery to relieve spinal pressure after being flown to Riley Children’s Hospital. After 10 days in ICU he is now undergoing physical therapy.
