Second Alcohol Ordinance Reading Tabled

(Greensburg, IN) – The second reading of an ordinance regulating alcohol in county-operated parks was tabled by Decatur County Commissioners this week.

County Attorney Chad Smith presented the ordinance, but a discussion ensued after it was discovered more edits to the proposal are needed before a vote is taken.

Questions arose about how specific the ordinance needs to be.

The proposed ordinance approved on first reading last month calls for prohibiting alcoholic beverages in parks and recreation areas controlled by county commissioners unless an exception is requested and granted.

This could keep booze from being consumed in Rebekah Park, which is included in the City of Greensburg’s DORA.

Smith reminded commissioners that the park alcohol ban cannot override state rules that have been established with the DORA.

A vote on the ordinance is now expected to take place at the next commissioners meeting after proposed amendments are added.

The commissioners’ next meeting will take place on Monday, June 17 at 8 a.m. in Room 106 of the Decatur County Courthouse.
