BATESVILLE, IN — Batesville Community School Corporation (BCSC) Transportation Director Greg Ehrman appeared before Batesville City Council Monday night to call attention to a couple of safety issues.
He asked City Council to look into the parking situation on Central Avenue west of Park Avenue, where vehicles parked on the south side of the street cause school buses and other vehicles to go left of center.
Ehrman also brought up the possibility of making part of the west side of Mulberry Street in front of Batesville Middle School a “No Parking” area north of the main entrance toward the new entry near the former BMS gym.
He said the current parking situation on the west side of Mulberry near the crosswalks creates a major blind spot, especially if the crossing lights are not activated.
Ehrman added vehicles block the crossing lights when parked near the new crosswalk.
“We’re always looking for a way to make it a little safer for somebody to cross the street, somebody driving down the street…anything we can to make it safer for the kids, safer for the buses in an attempt to avoid something bad from happening, “Ehrman said.
After discussion, it was agreed that an ordinance should be drafted to address these issues.
“I think what they came up with was right in line with what we (BCSC) are looking for,” Ehrman added. “Again, anything that increases safety.”
The proposed new rules may be up for consideration at next month’s council meeting.
