School bus crash report cites speed, sun and oncoming traffic

Versailles, In. — WCPO in Cincinnati has obtained the crash report from the South Dearborn Community School bus crash earlier this month on State Road 350 in Aurora. The driver, Raymond Nies, 64, of Moores Hill, reportedly was driving too fast, fighting glare from the sun and evasive action was not possible because of oncoming traffic.

The report from Indiana State Police says the impact moved the Rumpke truck 40-feet and left one student pinned.

The motorist immediately behind the bus swerved off the road and hit a mailbox in order to avoid a collision. Other witnesses told police the sun was very bright at the time of the crash.

No charges have been filed in the crash. The report is expected to be turned over to the prosecutors’ office in April for review.
