Robert “Bob” Swininger, 60, of Franklin County, Indiana, lost his battle with cancer at home surrounded by his wife and children on June 22, 2016.
He was born March 15, 1956 in Rushville, Indiana, the son of Mildred and the late Lawrence Gabbard.
A 1974 graduate of Laurel High School, Robert enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1974 until his honorable discharge in 1978. During his enlistment, Robert was a member of the elite Silent Drill Team where he was promoted to the rank of inspector. Following his service, he became a member of the Brookville Police Department. Robert also had worked for Floyd Warner. He became a general contractor and for over thirty years, he owned and operated his own contracting business until he was forced to stop due to illness.
He married his high school sweetheart, Victoria Bishop, on July 16, 1978 and enjoyed 38 years with her.
Robert was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting on the weekends and loved spending time with his family.
Survivors besides his wife, Victoria, include a son, Ryan and wife, Katherine (Duffy) Swininger; a daughter, Kristan Cloyd and husband, Travis; his mother, Mildred Gabbard; sisters, Jackie (David) Hornaday, Tara (Brian) Bowling, Vicki (Roger) Johnson, Sharon Holiday and Connie Turner; brothers, Rod Gabbard (Jamie) and Jerry Gabbard; grandchildren, Luke, Isabelle, and Riley Swininger; dear friends, Patrick Heis, Greg Raider and Duane Toney; along with many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Robert was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.
Robert was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Gabbard, his stepfather, Lawrence Gabbard and father, Robert Leon Swininger.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016, at the Bible Baptist Church in Metamora, Indiana and funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the church. Conducting the service will be Pastor Ron McCullough and Mike Metcalf. Robert will be laid to rest with military honors at Laurel North Cemetery.
