Robert Herlon Metcalf, age 94, of Brookville, died Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Waters of Batesville.
Born April 25, 1924 in Jackson County, Kentucky, he was the oldest of 13 children born to Charles and Daisy (Reese) Metcalf. He was raised on a farm in Oak Forest (Alley Road) area and he resided there for 73 years, sold, and then moved to Brookville. He farmed, raised cattle and worked at area factories, retiring from Hill-Rom in Batesville. In his leisure time he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a devout Christian, relishing in the love of the Lord. Robert married Virgie Mae Browning on October 9, 1943 and she passed away on June 28, 1994.
Those surviving who will cherish Robert’s memory include his children, Sandra K. (Stanley) Colwell of Brookville, Harold E. (Louella) Metcalf of Metamora, and Deborah Metcalf of Batesville. Besides his parents and wife of 51 years, Virgie Mae, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Leo; one daughter, Barbara Metcalf, and a granddaughter, Angela Metcalf.
In addition to his children, he leaves behind 7 sisters, Rosena Gesell of Brookville, Mary Alice Metzger of Florida, Alberta Lacy of Brookville, Alma Feltz of Florida, Susan (Allen) Bohlke of Florida, Charlene Ollier of California, and Nancy (Keith) Herald of Brookville; 3 brothers, Milo (Helen) of Greensburg, Doyle (Carol) of Richmond, and Jerry (Tina) of Brookville; 5 grandchildren, Alan Colwell, Vickie Thorp, Stephanie Colwell, Nathan Metcalf, and Rebecca Kallen; 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great, great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, December 28, 2018 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, 929 Main Street, Brookville. Tom Marshall of Blooming Grove Family Worship Center, will officiate the service at 1 p.m. and burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.
