(Statehouse) – Indiana House lawmakers are still debating a bill that could raise vehicle registration fees and add new charges for delivery trucks.
House Bill 1461, which is still being discussed in committee, aims to bring in more money to fix roads and bridges across the state.
One proposed change would raise vehicle registration fees by 10% over four years, starting in July 2025.
Lawmakers say the current fees haven’t changed since 1996, despite rising costs and aging infrastructure.
The bill would also give counties the option to charge a fee to retail delivery vehicles, like Amazon or FedEx trucks—a cost that could eventually be passed on to customers through higher shipping fees.
Supporters say the changes could generate about $60 million for transportation needs, with counties required to spend a portion of the new revenue on road maintenance.
The bill is still moving through the Indiana House, and lawmakers say discussions on ways to boost transportation funding will continue.
