Rising Sun, In. — A report from the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department says Rising Sun chief of police David Hewitt was killed in a crash Wednesday morning. Initial reports indicate the crash occurred at 7:20 a.m on State Road 56 near Spring Branch Road in icy conditions.

The following statement was released by Rising Sun mayor Brent Bascom:

It is with great sadness that I must confirm that David Hewitt, Chief of Police for Rising Sun, Indiana, passed away this morning from injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident in Switzerland County, Indiana.

Chief Hewitt served Southeastern Indiana for 27 years as a Police Officer for the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department, the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, the Lawrenceburg Police Department, and the Rising Sun Police Department. He became employed by Rising Sun Police Department in 1998 and was named the Chief of Police in 2004. At this time, I am ordering that all flags in the City of Rising Sun be lowered to half-staff and to remain at half-staff for a period of 27 days, one day for each year of service that Chief Hewitt gave to the citizens of our area.

On behalf of the City of Rising Sun, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Chief Hewitt’s family. I ask that everyone please respect the privacy of Chief Hewitt’s family and that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tragic loss.
