Gerald E. “Jerry” Lake

Gerald E. Lake, age 79 of Batesville, died Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Margaret Mary Health.  Born December 28, 1938 in Franklin County Indiana, he is the son of Dorothy (Nee: Wilson) and John Lake.  He served in the army during the Bay of Pigs Invasion.  Following the service, he married Joann Gessell June 6, 1964 at St. Michael’s Church in Brookville, Indiana.  He and Joann owned the Batesville Liquor Store for 31 years.

Jerry was a member of the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271, the Knights of Columbus Council #1461 and St. Louis Church.  After selling the store, he continued to work for the new owners.  A fan of I.U. basketball, he was able to attend a few games this season.  Jerry was also a Reds fan and has been suffering along with everyone else through some lean years the last few seasons.  He was a long time league bowler and liked eating out frequently.  He and Joann enjoyed going to the riverboat and regular visits to Las Vegas.  In addition to Vegas, they were able to see many parts of the country and took some overseas trips as well.  A favorite was their trip to Rome.

Jerry is survived by brothers David Lake of Greenfield, Indiana, Don Lake of New Trenton, Indiana, Frank Lake of Cedar Grove, Indiana as well as several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother Melvin Lake and foster sister Delores Helton.

Visitation is Tuesday, February 19th, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home.  Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 20th at St. Louis Church with Rev. Stan Pondo officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and the Ripley County V.F.W. Post #3183.  Memorials may be made to the Nathan Lake Memorial Scholarship Fund or St. Louis Cemetery Fund.
