Richard Ernest Shuman 84 of Dillsboro, IN passed away Saturday November 13, 2021 at St Elizabeth Hospice in Edgewood, KY. Richard was born April 25, 1937 in Milan, IN, the son of Vera (Pegee) Shuman and Delver Shuman. Richard was raised and lived the majority of his life on his Grandparents Pegee’s farm west of Dillsboro. Growing up Richard attended Dillsboro schools graduating in 1956. Richard excelled at several sports – Baseball, Basketball & Track. After high school, he attended Hanover College where he continued playing Baseball, Basketball and adding Football. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at Hanover where he made many lifelong friendships.
Richard began working at Schenley Distilleries in Lawrenceburg in 1958 and continued there in various rolls including purchasing and bottling /production manager until the closing of the distillery in 1989. He then went on to work in several distilleries in Louisville, Albany, Ga & Atlanta, Ga. Every time he would “retire” he would get a call hey can you come help us with our production facility. He truly loved working in the distillery industry.
Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary (Elbrecht) Shuman. Daughters – Cheryl Shuman Dillsboro, IN and Jody Hurr Dillsboro, IN. Grandchildren – Emily (Cody) Miller, Rising Sun, IN and Evan Hurr, Dillsboro, IN. Sister-in-law Margaret Vogel Canaan, IN. Niece -Beth (Keith) Sieverding and Nephew Brian (Pam) Vogel.
He is proceeded in death by his son Darren Shuman, his parents, his Uncle Howard Pegee, and Aunt Verna Doenges
Visitation will be Thursday November 18, 2021 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Filter-DeVries-Moore Funeral Home in Dillsboro. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday November 19, 2021 at 11 am. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Dillsboro Fire Department or the Special Olympics Indiana – Ripley Ohio Dearborn.
