Washington D.C. –U.S. Congressman Greg Pence (IN-06) recently discussed the impact of blocked rail crossings on Hoosiers in the Sixth District. Indiana has over 3,800 miles of Class I railroad tracks, including 1,440 miles operated by Norfolk Southern Corporation. “I have received calls from constituents and local officials in Muncie who have witnessed children climbing between cars and under these stopped trains just to get to school on time. I am sure we can all agree that this is a major safety concern,” said Congressman Pence.
Following various reports of significant disruptions, Class I rail operators – including Norfolk Southern — have engaged with community leaders to reduce the impact and occurrence of these stoppages. “These are great examples of industry and government working together to improve grade crossing safety and minimize avoidable stoppages,” said Congressman Pence.
Pence concluded by encouraging Class I rail operators to continue working with local officials to develop a strategy that will reduce stoppages and their impact on rural communities.
