Rape alleged prior to pursuit, police shooting

Shelby County, In. — The Indiana State Police are continuing their investigation into a police action shooting by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Friday when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Jordan Smith, 26, of Indianapolis, near I-74 and Walnut Street. A female passenger has told police she was raped by Smith prior to the pursui and shooting. The pursuit ensued that ended with gunfire near Shelby County Roads 700 West and 800 North. Smith was wounded in the incident and transported to an Indianapolis hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle Smith was driving was reported stolen from Marion County about one month ago. He also had an outstanding warrant from Marion County for auto theft.
