South Ripley and other area youth teams kicked off the 2020 Dirt Road League basketball season this past Sunday afternoon after seeing the November slate canceled due to COVID-19.
The Raider 5th grade fell to Franklin County 21-16 in their first game on Sunday. Eli Gilpin led with five points while Gabe Stone scored 4 points. Other South Ripley scorers included Levi Hunt with 3 points and Abe Speer and Blake Gunter each with 2 points.
South Ripley responded after a sluggish start and looked much more comfortable in a 35-12 win over Lawrenceburg to end the day. The Raiders jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back as seven different players hit the score column. Speer led with 9 points while Gilpin scored 8 points and Stone added 7 points. Landon Werner scored 6 points, Hunt and Camdin Hodge each scored two points and Gunter added a point. SR combined for a 10-of-14 clip from the free-throw line on the day while pulling down 22 rebounds and notching 11 steals in the second game.
