(Statehouse) – Legislation authored by local State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond) would prohibit Indiana students from using cell phones and other personal devices during the school day.

Senate Bill 78 aims to have students focused on their lessons and engage with their peers instead of spending their free time staring at their phones.

The legislation expands on Senate Enrolled Act 185, a 2024 law authored by Raatz that prohibits the use of personal electronic devices during instructional time.

“SB 78 does not ban technology in the classroom, it simply prohibits personal devices from being used. School-issued computers and other devices can still be used in the classroom. The bill also makes exception under certain circumstances for things like medical conditions, language translation and if authorized by a superintendent,” Raatz said. “I look forward to working with my fellow lawmakers on this bill to ensure our students are getting the most out of their education.”

Raatz represents Senate District 27, which includes portions of Franklin County and all of Henry, Union and Wayne counties.
