(Southeastern IN) – After drifting lower through much of December, gas prices have ticked up slightly in recent days across Indiana and much of the country, though they remain below late-fall levels.
Nationally, analysts say prices eased through the holiday season as demand softened, then nudged higher again with winter weather and refinery maintenance. Indiana has followed a similar pattern, with prices still sitting below last month’s averages, even after the recent uptick.
That broader trend is reflected at the local level across southeastern Indiana.
In Batesville, the lowest reported price for regular unleaded in the past day stands at $2.89 a gallon.
In Greensburg, drivers are also seeing regular gas as low as $2.89 a gallon, with diesel reported as low as $3.95.
In Brookville, regular unleaded is likewise being reported at $2.89 a gallon, keeping prices consistent across much of the immediate area.
Further south, Osgood currently shows the cheapest regular gas locally, with regular unleaded reported as low as $2.74 a gallon. Diesel there has been reported at $3.70.
For comparison, significantly cheaper prices have been reported in nearby metro areas.
In Cincinnati, the cheapest reported regular gas checks in at $2.45 a gallon.
In Indianapolis, one driver reported regular unleaded for $2.20 a gallon at a Sam’s Club on the city’s north side.
Diesel prices have been reported as low as $3.29 a gallon in both Cincinnati and Indianapolis, undercutting most diesel prices currently seen across southeastern Indiana.
Looking ahead, fuel analysts generally expect prices to remain relatively steady or drift slightly lower through the heart of winter, barring major refinery disruptions or sharp changes in crude oil prices. Any larger swings, they say, are more likely later in the spring as seasonal demand begins to rise.
