(Batesville, IN) – No one was injured in a kitchen fire last evening at a home on North Depot Street in Batesville.

Firefighters arriving on the scene around 5:18 pm found an oven that was smoking because of a grease fire.

The flames were already out when crews arrived.

Firefighters stayed on the scene to ventilate smoke from the house.

Meanwhile, Batesville Fire and Rescue has safety tips to prevent and handle oven fires, which can occur unexpectedly:

  • Stay in the Kitchen: Always stay close when using the oven, and regularly check on your food.
  • Keep Your Oven Clean:** Regularly clean your oven to prevent grease and food buildup that can ignite.

If a Fire Starts –

  • Turn Off the Oven: Immediately turn off the oven and keep the door closed.
  • Keep the Door Closed: Do not open the oven door. This will help contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.
  • Call 911: If the fire does not go out quickly, evacuate your home and call 911.
