(Greensburg, IN) – Two new Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies were sworn in yesterday by Decatur Superior Court Judge Matthew Bailey.

Deputy Joshua Gaither is a graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School and lives in Napoleon.

He served the previous four-and-a-half years as a Decatur County detention deputy. When he left that position, he was a Sergeant on the evening shift.

Deputy Morgan Smith served one-and-a-half years as a detention deputy at the Decatur County Detention Center.

Sheriff Bill Meyerrose says applicants for patrol deputy positions have their prior work history and work ethic while employed at the Decatur County Detention Center carefully scrutinized, which  played a big part in the decision to hire Gaither and Smith for their new roles.

“Working in the Detention Center is a good first step for anyone wanting a career in law enforcement, which paid off for both Deputy Gaither and Deputy Smith. We look forward to the assets Deputy Gaither and Deputy Smith bring to our department,” Meyerrose said.

Gaither and Smith are now beginning their careers by working with field training deputies and will enroll in the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in the near future for training there.

Deputies Gaither and Smith take the places of Noah Moore, who is now an Indiana State Police trooper, and Detective Jean Burkert who, after about 24 years of service between the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, is now working in the private sector.
