Mrs. Myrtle (Smith) Chandler Butler

Mrs. Myrtle (Smith) Chandler Butler, age 79, of Fairview, Indiana, entered this life on June 1, 1945 in Booneville, Kentucky. She was the loving daughter of the late Ike and Jalie (Gabbard) Smith. She was raised in Booneville, Kentucky where she attended high school. During high school, Myrtle worked for Semental Grocery Store and Frisch’s in Aurora, Indiana. Myrtle was united in marriage to Sam Chandler for 20 years and this union was blessed with a son, Kendall and a daughter, Tracy. She was later united in marriage on October 30, 1985 to Robert Charles “Bob” Butler in Warsaw, Kentucky. This happy blended family was blessed with six children, Shan, Trevor, Bryant, La’Tesa, Faith, and Meredith. Myrtle and Bob shared nearly 23 years together until his passing on July 4, 2008. She owned and operated East Enterprise General Store for 10 years. Myrtle also worked for several years at Oaks Grocery Store in Quercus Grove, Indiana. Myrtle proudly owned and operated Fairview Grocery Store for several years, though to many in the community, it was simply known as “Myrtle’s”, retiring in 2017. Myrtle resided most of her life in the Fairview Community where she was a faithful member of the Fairview Baptist Church. Myrtle enjoyed going to church, working, and sitting on the back porch watching the birds, especially cardinals. She loved gardening and spending time with her family and her church family. Myrtle passed away with her loving family by her side at 9:33 p.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at her residence.

Myrtle will be missed by her son, Kendall Chandler and his wife, Theresa of Fairview, IN; her step-sons, Trevor Butler of La Grange, KY and Shan Butler of Moorefield, IN; her step-daughters, Faith (Butler) Satchwell and her husband, Shawn of Independence, KY, and Meredith (Butler) Coker of Florence, KY; her step-son-in-law, Joe Gladden of Del City, OK; her grandchildren, Justin Sandlin, Alicia Webb (Scott Heffelmire), Jake Chandler (Lindsay), Crystal Martin (John), Mark Chandler (Robin Rickett), Brayden Coker, Avery Rains, Bryonna Butler, Jessica Farrar, Allison Courtney, Jason Rook, and Andrew Peelman (Daryl); her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jonah, Ellie Kate, Remi, Jaylee, Clayton, Christian, April, Railie, Kinsey, Thomas, Lucas, Kenneth, Sebastian, Ashtyn, and two on the way, Briar and Sophia and her several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ike and Jalie (Gabbard) Smith; her husband, Robert Charles “Bob” Butler; her daughter and son-in-law, Tracy Lynn (Chandler) and Robert “Butch” York; her step-son, Bryant W. Butler; her step-daughter, La’Tesa Jean “Tesa” (Butler) Gladden; her step-daughter-in-law, Eula Faye (Booker) Butler; her-great-granddaughters, Ava and Alivia Peelman; her brothers, Kelly and Willard Smith and her sisters, Dorothy Leibecke and Beulah Herald.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Interim Healthcare Hospice of Lawrenceburg, Indiana for their compassionate care and support. We could not thank Raine Higham, Jayla Wheeler, and Michelle Kohlsdorf enough for their kindness and compassion in comforting Myrtle over the past two years. We will always be grateful for their presence and unwavering commitment during this difficult time. Our deepest gratitude as well to Myrtle’s special friends and great helpers, Mary Ann Hopper, Connie Addison, Marilyn Watkins, and everyone at Fairview Baptist Church. We are truly blessed to be part of such a loving and compassionate community.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043 and from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2025, at the Fairview Baptist Church, 7270 State Road 250, Bennington, Indiana 47011.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2025, by Bro. John Hale and Bro. Hobert Byrd, at the Fairview Baptist Church, 7270 State Road 250, Bennington, Indiana 47011.

Interment will follow in the Lee Cemetery, on Nell Lee Road in Fairview, Indiana.
