Mr. Marshall Allen Mathews, age 86, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on August 18, 1930, in New Marion, Indiana, the loving son of the late, Walter and Mae D. (Demaree) Mathews. He was raised in Vevay, Indiana, where he was a handful and attended the Vevay High School until the 10th grade when he went to work with his uncle for Caterpillar in Illinois. Marshall was inducted into the United States Army Air Force on May 21, 1948. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on February 13, 1950 at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Marshall was inducted into the United States Air Force on February 14, 1950, at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, serving during the Korean Conflict. He served in Germany and North Africa. He received the Occupation Medal (German), Good Conduct Medal and the Berlin Airlift Device. He served in the 1254th Air transport Group Special Missions. Marshall was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant on March 5, 1953 in Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C. Marshall was united in marriage on March 21, 1962 at the Ruter Chapel United Methodist Church in Vevay, Indiana, to Lona F. White and to this union arrived a daughter, Michele René and two sons, Michael Ryan and Patrick Allen to bless their home. Marshall was employed as a mechanic where he worked on transmissions for General Motors in Madison, Indiana. He was also employed as a concrete foreman for Solitt Construction Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he helped build the Indiana Kentucky Electric Corporation in Madison, Indiana. He was also employed as a marble and ceramic installer for the Vermont Marble Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, until he became disabled in an industrial accident, retiring in 1982 after 20 years of service. Marshall was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and a lifetime member of the Vevay VFW Post #5396. He was also a member of the Whitestown Lutheran Church in Whitestown, Indiana. Marshall resided in the Zionsville community for 20 years and later resided on Smith Ridge in Moorefield, Indiana since 1986. In his early years of life, Marshall enjoyed working on cars, coaching youth football, playing pool and attending to his garden. He also enjoyed fishing, mowing his grass, playing cards and telling jokes. Marshall passed away at 10:35 am, Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.
Marshall will be dearly missed by his daughter: René Mathews Stewart and her husband: Ryan of Vevay, IN; his sons: Michael Ryan Mathews of St. Petersburg, FL and Patrick Allen Mathews of Clearwater, FL; his grandchildren: Matthew Marshall Mulligan (Airman First Class), John Patrick Mulligan, Alixandra Shank-Mulligan, Gemma Mae Mathews and Tonya (Mathews) Balance; his sisters: Alma Downey of Anderson, IN, and Ione Rodgers of Shelbyville, IN and his several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Mae D. (Demaree) Mathews; his grandson: R.J. (Mathews) Balance; his brother: Walter Edwin Mathews; his sisters: Aldean Williams and Freda Lindfors and his nephew: Walter “Wally” Mathews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 9, 2017, at 1:00 pm, by Rev. Wayne Daugherty, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.
Interment and full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
