(Richmond, IN) – More than 2,000 people within a half-mile radius were ordered to evacuate after a massive fire broke out at a plastics recycling processing plant in Richmond Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze started in a nearby tractor-trailer and spread across the facility.
Indiana State Fire Marshal Stephen Jones says the flames are going to burn for a few days.
Because of toxic smoke from burning plastic, which could be seen several miles away across the state line in Ohio, those outside the half-mile radius were urged to shelter in place and turn off their HVAC units.
A firefighter was treated at the hospital for an ankle injury and has been released.
No other injuries have been reported.
