More sticker shock at the gas pump

SOUTHEASTERN IN — It costs more to fill up, and there’s apparently no end in sight to pain at the pump.

Regular unleaded has topped the $4 a gallon mark around the area.

GasBuddy.com says the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Indiana is now $4.13, which is up almost 13 cents since Monday and 50 cents more since last week.

The national average price of gasoline in the US yesterday rewrote the all-time high to $4.104 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.

The previous all-time high was set in 2008 at $4.103 per gallon, right before the Great Recession and housing crisis.

Along with setting a new all-time high, the national average is seeing its largest ever seven-day spike at 49.1 cents per gallon, eclipsing the 49 cent weekly rise after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Many gas price records have been broken due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That has pushed Western countries to impose severe sanctions on Russia and curb Russian crude oil exports to the global market.

On this date a year ago, drivers across Indiana were paying $2.70 per gallon for regular unleaded.
