Mitchell Banks Coombs, 96 of Cumming, Georgia

Mitchell Banks Coombs, 96, of Cumming passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Born May 5, 1928, in Carrollton, KY to the late John and Ina Banks Coombs he had lived in Cumming for the past 24 years, moving here from Indiana, Maryland and Pennsylvania before settling in the area and retiring from Cummins with over 33 years of service. His wife of 75 years, Betty worked as a waitress at her family’s restaurant. It was there that she met Mitchell. She asked a girl working with her “do you know him.” She told Betty that she went to school with him. Betty replied, “I sure would like a date with him, and the rest is history.” They loved to travel and were avid Atlanta Braves fans, Mitchell earned the lifetime membership to the Odd Fellows last year. In addition to his parents Mitchell is preceded in death by his siblings, Margarite Caldwell, Gayle Coombs, Bernice Rice, John Coombs, Martha Evelyn Cooper and his daughter-in-law, Debbie Coombs. Survivors include his wife, Betty Coombs; children, Jim Coombs, Gary (Joyce) Coombs, Kevin (Vaughn) Coombs, Karen (Joey) Walker; grandchildren, Tim Dufour, Carrie Mescall, Lori Moore, Chad Coombs, Chris Coombs, Krystle Coombs, Misty Heath, Madelyn Walker and Ian Walker, and 13 great grandchildren as well and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends Friday December 20, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Ingram Funeral Home. Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Mitchell Coombs will be Monday December 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Westport Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the service hour at the funeral home.
