MILAN, IN — Dedication of a new Indiana State Historical Marker commemorating the “Milan Miracle” is set for Saturday, March 26 at Noon at 201 West Carr Street across the street from the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum in Milan’s historic downtown.
The marker will be unveiled by Patty Marshall, the lone surviving cheerleader from the 1954 squad, and the current Milan High School cheerleaders.
This date of the event coincides with the 2022 Indiana High School Boys Basketball State Finals.
Among those scheduled to attend will be four of the eight surviving members of the 1954 Milan basketball team, including that year’s Mr. Indiana Basketball, Bobby Plump.
Speakers scheduled for the marker dedication are Plump; Tom Kohlmeier, President of Milan ’54, Inc.; Casey Pfeiffer with the Indiana Historical Bureau; and Milan Town Board President Deb Shumate.
Following the dedication, there will be a reception in the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum for all in attendance.
Admission to the museum will be free all day.
This will be the 10th Indiana State Historical Marker in Ripley County. For more on those, visit in.gov/history.
Milan (enrollment 161) defeated Muncie Central (enrollment 1,662) 32-30 on March 20, 1954, at then-Butler Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to win the Indiana Basketball State Championship.
The team’s win that cold March night inspired the 1986 motion picture “Hoosiers” starring Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman.
