Melba M. Thompson, 84, of Versailles passed away at 1:10am, Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. She was born near Versailles on April 12, 1936 the daughter of Durward and Leona Waters Aikins. She was married to Everett Thompson on June 11, 1955 and he preceded her in death on December 22, 2020. Survivors include one son Kevin (Kay McCammon) of Versailles; one daughter Connie Jo (Jon) Martin of Greensburg; four grandchildren Mandy (Micah) Lohrum of Greensburg, Amber (Terry) Jesse of Lawrenceburg, Andrew Martin of Greensburg, and JoBeth Martin of Cincinnati; five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charles Aikins and Ray Aikins, and her sisters Ruth Semon and an infant sister Norma. Mrs. Thompson was a 1954 graduate of Versailles High School. In her younger years Melba worked at the Southeastern Indiana REMC in Osgood where she met her future husband. Her main career was with the US Postal Service where she worked at the Versailles Post Office. Her career there spanned over 30 years and she was eventually named postmaster. Melba was a lifelong member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church where she served in several capacities including being the church pianist and organist for over 60 years. She was also a member of the OES chapter 333 for over 50 years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 11am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church with Rev. Becky Pohle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and also from 10am until time of services Saturday at the church. Eastern Star services will be on Friday at 6:45pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Eastern Star or the Tanglewood Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
