Two of our area girls varsity basketball teams participated in the Edinburgh Tournament.  Both captured two wins and both also took one loss.  However, the order of the Ws and the L mattered in regards to final placement in the event.

For South Ripley, the one loss 31-28 to Southwestern Shelby, came in the opening round.  That knocked the Raiders down into the consolation portion of the tournament.

South Ripley was the better team for three quarters, but Southwestern Shelby dominated the second quarter 18-3.  Rachel Meyer led Team Green with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Raiders next won the consolation game against Hagerstown 48-32.  Ripley had good starts to both halves, outscoring the Tigers by a combined count of 33-17.

The Versailles gals got 19 points from Gracie Gunter and 10 from Emily Flood.  Gunter also had seven rebounds and five steals.

The victory matched up South Ripley with Knightstown in the fifth place game where the Raiders prevailed 50-13.

Defensively, South Ripley didn’t allow more than five points in any given quarter.  Offensively, Meyer turned in 18 points and Gunter scored 10.  Gunter also collected five boards, six assists and five swipes.

The other area team at Edinburgh was South Dearborn.  The Knights beat Hagerstown 48-34 during round one.

Down one at half, SD outscored the Tigers 25-11 in the second half.  The Knights saw Emily Elliott put up 14 points and Natalie Rupp record 10.

In the second round, SD fell 45-34 to Southwestern Shelby.  Elliott’s 12 points and seven from Rupp were tops for the team.

That moved the Aurora ladies into the third place game against Indianapolis Lutheran where SD garnered its second win of the tournament 44-31.  Jillian Bond tallied 11 points in the place game.  Rupp followed with nine.

Southwestern Shelby ended up winning the tournament topping host Edinburgh in the final game 40-33.
