The Lady Bulldog softball team opened the season tonight with a home victory over Rushville by a score of 8-4.
Abby Westerfeld got the win. She tossed two strike outs in the 1st inning to set the tone for a masterful 6 inning pitching performance. The Bulldogs score a run in the 1st inning with hits from Kylie Laker (double), followed by a Kara Obermeyer single. The second Bulldog run came in the 2nd inning when Abby Westerfeld scored off a single by freshman, Sydnee Schaefer.
A defensive stance by the Bulldogs left Rushville scoreless again in the 3rd when freshman catcher Emma Belter caught a Rushville base runner stealing 3rd after a strike out pitch. Batesville scored 2 more runs in the 3rd inning with 2 outs with hits from Paige Oldham (double), Emma Belter (double), Westerfeld.
Rushville scored 1 in the 4th, and 3 in the 6th to tie the game.
The first 2 Bulldogs outed in the 6th inning, but hits hy Kylie Laker, Kate Burkhart (double), Ellie Waechter, Obermeyer (double), Oldham, and Belter scored 4 runs.
Rushville’s first two batters of the 7th inning reached base. A double play (tag, then 4-3) by Burkhart, and a right field catch by Chloe Saler ended the game.
The Bulldogs finished the game with 9 singles, 7 doubles, 2 triples, and only 1 strike out and no base on balls. Westerfeld finished the game with 3 strike outs and 2 walks.
The Bulldogs are 1-0 on the season and 1-0 in the EIAC. Next Up – the Eagles of Jac-Cen-Del away at 5:30 pm on Tuesday 4/2.
