The Batesville Lady Bulldogs traveled to Greenwood Saturday morning to face the Greenwood Lady Woodmen winning 5-0.
It took the Lady Bulldogs the first 10 minutes to get accustomed to the speed of the turf, but after that learning curve, the game was all Batesville. Carlie Werner got the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard with 33:11 left in the first half. Marigrace Anderson played a perfectly paced through ball and Werner was able to physically hold off a defender and finished the goal past the Lady Woodmen keeper.
Batesville would go up 2-0 just 6 minutes later. This time Anderson was on the scoring end with a nice assist from Georgia Gratz. Before the half was over, the Lady Bulldogs added one more to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Ashlyn Czerniak was in the right place at the right time after Gratz hit a shot that bounced off the post and Czerniak was there to clean up the rebound for the score. The Batesville defense only allowed 3 shots in the half and did a nice job shutting down the Lady Woodmen attacks.
In the second half, Batesville would play add on two more times. The 4th Bulldog score came from Gratz. Defender Baylee Rohlfing stepped up and won a 50/50 ball on the left wing and carried the ball forward and found Gratz open in the middle of the box for the score. Another defender, Jessica Westerfeld, got into the scoring column for the Lady Bulldogs with 10:37 left to play in the game. After a clearance from the Greenwood defense, Westerfeld hit a 1-time shot from 40 yards out that curved perfectly into the far post upper 90 for the 5th goal of the game.
Olive Cerniglia recorded the shutout and the Lady Bulldogs defense now has 4 shutouts on the season. Ellie Cassidy and Liz Heidlage did a nice job shutting down the Greenwood attacks. Cassidy continues to be a dominant force in the center of the Batesville defense. Heidlage is always a consistent player who runs sideline to sideline controlling the midfield for the Lady Bulldogs.
