Kettler speaks to Decatur County ag community

Greensburg, In. — About 85 people attended the Greensburg-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Future in Farming Ag Dinner Thursday night at the Knights of Columbus. The featured speaker, Indiana Department of Agriculture director Bruce Kettler told the crowd the Indiana ag economy is vibrant, forward-looking and diverse.

Kettler cited corn, soybeans, livestock, poultry, artisan products and the timber industry. Indiana leads the nation in duck production and is a leading manufacturer office furniture and kitchen cabinets. In some cases, whole hardwood logs are shipped to China for processing.

He says the structure of the department facilitates industry growth by emphasizing sustainability and collaboration between producers and consumers. Efforts like the Indiana Grown Initiative not only exclusively promote locally produced products, but also become marketing tools for major retailers.
