It’s so unfortunate to have to report the passing of a legend.  You’ll see more details on the Tuesday death of legendary race car driver and owner Parnelli Jones in a story unto itself in our sports area.  The first to qualify for the 500 at more than 150 mph…  wow.  Turns out I’m only about 25 years younger now than Mr. Jones was when he passed, but I definitely recall hearing his name from the time I was a very small child.  Our condolences to his family and friends, and to any of you who might’ve known him as well.

Sometimes those stories are needed.  But we have other things going on, as well.

How about another strong baseball performance by the Reds on the road last night?  A lot of it was fed from the mound, in Frankie Montas’ best starting pitching performance of the season so far.  He went 7 full innings and held Colorado scoreless with a 1-hitter, and 9 strikeouts.  Fernando Cruz took over in the 8th.  With further good relief from Buck Farmer, the Rockies could muster nothing, and the Reds took the game 4-1, winning the series as well, their first at Coors Field in 8 years.  It wraps up this afternoon as the Reds look to head home and host the Cubs starting tomorrow.  Join us for the Reds broadcast against the Rockies at 2:40 today, only on the Sports Voice, 103.9 WRBI.

Congrats to Batesville senior pitcher Jack Grunkemeyer, whose high school baseball career wrapped up last Saturday.  Before he heads to Northwestern University in the fall, there’ll be another chance to see Grunkemeyer pitch in Indiana.  He’s been selected for the North-South All-Star games at Huntington University, the 21st thru 23rd of this month.

Congratulations also to Batesville’s 9U baseball All-Stars, all of them 9 years old and younger, winning last weekend’s North Vernon Summer Frenzy tournament.  Batesville won its first game 18 to 4, then 7 to 6, and won the tournament title, 10 to 3.
