Jim’s Journal, April 29th, 2024

The pairings are now set for next month’s high school softball and baseball tournament sectional action, across Indiana.  In case you didn’t get to hear who’s playing whom Monday morning, we’ve got all the matchups still posted, a bit farther down in this space.  We’ll keep them up for a few days, until we start hearing exact gameday and first pitch time info from the host schools.  The IHSAA tells us some may have that info ready as soon as later this week.  We’ll bring that to you on the air, and post it here as well, as soon as we get it.  The games start May 20th in softball, and the 22nd for baseball.

Upcoming regular-season diamond action today and this evening includes Batesville softball visiting South Dearborn, also South Decatur at Greensburg, Oldenburg Academy hosting Waldron, and East Central at Rushville.

Monday baseball has Franklin County hosting Greensburg, East Central hosting South Dearborn, and Batesville going to Lawrenceburg.

Both South Ripley baseball and softball teams are playing at Milan today, and both Jac-Cen-Del squads are at Rising Sun.

Junior varsity baseball has Batesville still looking strong, knocking Connersville out 13-3 at home Saturday.  The Bulldogs were behind for a while, then came alive, scoring 6 times in the bottom of the 5th inning, and 5 more in the 6th.  The win makes Batesville 6 & 1 on the season so far.

It was middle school golf, the Batesville Invitational, at Hillcrest Saturday.  Eight teams from 6 schools took part, Franklin County winning with a team score of only 187 strokes to Batesville team #1’s 202, Columbus Middle coming in 3rd at 213.  The St. Louis School was also there, with 2 teams, as BMS had.  The girls’ medalist, as she has been several times this spring, was Batesville’s Stella Maple, shooting her best round of the season, a 43.

The Reds beat the Rangers in Texas 8-4 Saturday, but lost Friday and Sunday.  Tonight they open a new series against the Padres in San Diego, and of course because it’s on the west coast, it’ll be a late one back here.  Tonight’s broadcast begins at 9:10, only on the radio, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 FM WRBI.

How about those Pacers in the NBA playoffs Sunday?  They’ve looked really strong since losing the opening game of their series with the Milwaukee Bucks.  Sunday, Indiana got 29 points from Myles Turner, 24 from Tyrese Haliburton, and grabbed their 3rd win in the best-of-7 series, the final score 126-113.  With that 3 games to 1 lead, the Pacers could wrap the series up and move on to the next round if they can knock the Bucks out in Milwaukee Tuesday night.
