Irish Rework Defensive Staff

(South Bend) – Notre Dame is reshaping its defensive coaching staff as the program prepares for the 2026 season, promoting from within and adding an experienced assistant with both college and NFL credentials.

Defensive line coach Al Washington will move to coach linebackers, replacing Max Bullough, who recently left Notre Dame to become co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Michigan State. Bullough’s departure marks a step up in title and responsibility after a short but impactful stint with the Irish.

To fill the vacancy on the defensive line, Notre Dame is expected to hire Charlie Partridge from the Indianapolis Colts. Partridge spent the past two seasons coaching the Colts’ defensive line and brings nearly three decades of experience across college football and the NFL.

Partridge is well regarded for his track record developing defensive linemen at the collegiate level, particularly during a long run at Pittsburgh, where he coached multiple All-Americans and future NFL players. His background aligns with Notre Dame’s emphasis on strong line play in the trenches.

The move also reunites Partridge with Notre Dame defensive coordinator Chris Ash. The two have worked together at several stops, including Drake, Wisconsin and Arkansas, providing familiarity and continuity in defensive philosophy as the Irish reset their staff.

Washington brings significant experience to the linebackers role. Prior to coaching Notre Dame’s defensive line, he coached linebackers at Elon, Michigan and Ohio State, working with multiple All-Conference performers at the Power Five level.

The staff reshuffle comes as Notre Dame looks to maintain stability on defense while adapting to offseason turnover, positioning the program ahead of spring practices and the next phase of preparation.
