Iowa lawmakers consider civics test as part of high school graduation requirements

Batesville, In. — Iowa lawmakers are considering the implementation of a Civics test as a graduation requirement. The test would cover the basics of American democracy, history and the system of government.

House Study Bill 573 would require students to score at least 60 percent in order to pass the test. The requirement is the same for legal immigrants seeking citizenship.

A 2017 survey conducted by the Annenberg Policy Center revealed more than one-third of U.S. citizens cannot identify what freedom is protected by the First Amendment.

If the proposal is adopted testing would begin in the 2019-20 school year.
