Indiana’s Unemployment Rate Up Slightly in September

(Indianapolis, IN) – The State of Indiana’s unemployment rate in September went up one-tenth of a percent to 3.7 percent in September, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

By comparison, the national unemployment rate reported for September was 4.4 percent.

The jobs report was delayed by the federal government shutdown.

In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate is 63.7 percent compared to the national rate of 62.4 percent.

This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work.

Those not in the labor force include students, retirees and other non-working populations, such as those unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family’s childcare needs.

Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,493,277.

September  total private employment is 2,862,300, which is an increase of 5,100 from the previous month.

Industries that experienced job increases this month included:

  • Professional & Business Services (+2,100)
  • Leisure & Hospitality (+2,000)
  • Manufacturing (+1,800)
  • Construction (+1,800)
  • Financial Activities (+300)

As of September 25, there were 88,436 open job postings throughout the state.

As of the week ending on October 4, Indiana had 19,375 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
