(Statewide) – Indiana’s unemployment rate hit 4.4 percent in January, according to the latest report from the Department of Workforce Development.
That rate is unchanged from the previous month.
By comparison, the national rate in January was 4 percent.
Indiana’s labor force participation rate stood at 63.8 percent, which is above the national average of 62.6 percent. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work.
Those not in the labor force include, primarily, students, retirees and other non-working populations, such as those unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family’s childcare needs.
Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,485,632 and is at its highest on record.
As of March 3, there were 85,212 open job postings throughout the state.
As of the week ending on March 1, Indiana had 26,417 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
