(Indianapolis, IN) – The Indiana Supreme Court on Friday upheld the state’s near-total abortion ban.
The decision overturned a county judge’s ruling last fall that said the law violated privacy protections in the state’s constitution.
The law went into effect on September 15, 2022, before it was blocked on September 22, 2022.
That ruling allowed abortions to continue in the state, but Friday’s ruling means the law goes back into effect.
The plaintiffs have 30 days to ask for a new hearing, so the near-total ban will not take effect until August 1.
In Friday’s ruling, the justices left the door open to further possible legal challenges.
The abortion law, which was passed by the Indiana legislature last summer shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade, still faces another court challenge over claims it violates the state’s religious freedom law enacted in 2015.
