(Statewide) – One of the new laws that goes into effect Tuesday concerns something that lawmakers have been looking at for several years: adjusting the border between Illinois and Indiana.
The new establishes a commission, to be appointed by Gov. Mike Braun, which would consist of six people from Indiana and five from Illinois, whose job it would be to look into the possibility of changing the border agreement.
While the move is not favored by many people in Illinois by any means, seven counties there voted to secede from the state in November.
But, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is not in favor.
“I don’t think that’s attractive for anyone in Illinois, where wages are higher and the standard of living is higher, and we do provide health care for people in need,” he said.
A bill to create a counterpart commission in that state failed to pass.
It’s unclear how any movement on the issue would happen without mutual cooperation.
