STATEHOUSE — The Indiana House this week approved a bill that would change the rules for voting by mail.
House Bill 1116 would require a voter to say they cannot vote in person on Election Day or during the 28 days of early voting in order to vote by mail.
Exceptions would be made for the elderly and disabled.
The Republican-authored plan also calls for those who vote absentee in Indiana to include either their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
Democrats call the idea of identifying voters by either method “voter suppression.”
The measure, which has the backing of Indiana Secretary of State Holli Sullivan, now heads to the Senate.
