BLOOMINGTON, Ind.–The Indiana Hoosier football program welcomed their new quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Chandler Whitmer to Bloomington on Monday.
Whitmer brings a stellar resume with experience coaching top collegiate and NFL quarterbacks, including Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, and Michael Penix Jr.
Whitmer spent the last four NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers (2021-23) as an offensive quality control assistant and the Atlanta Falcons (2024) as a pass game specialist. He helped develop Herbert into the NFL’s most productive quarterback over his first three seasons and guided Penix Jr. into a starting role in Atlanta during a competitive NFC South title chase.
His NFL tenure included leading top-10 passing offenses in three of four seasons, with the Chargers ranking No. 3 in passing yards in 2021 (269.6 ypg) and 2022 (282.4 ypg). In Atlanta, the Falcons ranked No. 6 in passing in 2024 (238.9 ypg).
At the collegiate level, Whitmer contributed to College Football Playoff runs as a graduate assistant at Ohio State (2019) and Clemson (2020), working closely with Fields and Lawrence.
A former quarterback himself, Whitmer started 24 games for the University of Connecticut, finishing his career ranked fourth in program history in completions (403) and passing yards (5,082).
