BATESVILLE, Ind. – Indiana’s Natural Resources Commission is considering a proposal to allow Indiana hunters to use high-powered rifles.
Supporters of the change argue that high-powered rifles would be just as safe as guns currently allowed for deer hunters.
It has stirred debate locally as some area hunters say it could spell trouble in the woods.
“I think that it does concern me safety wise, there are a lot of people out there that really don’t know a whole lot about guns, that say ‘hey I’ll go hunt,’” said Mike Eckstein of Batesville.
An experienced hunter, Eckstein says he still gets an adrenaline rush when he spots a trophy buck.
“My heart is racing, my pulse is high and I can hardly think straight at all. I couldn’t imagine what it is like for a [first time hunter] with a gun that can shoot 350 plus yards.”
Opponents of the proposal also say it could give hunters an unfair advantage and possibly lower deer populations.
The change would allow for any rifle that fires a .243-caliber round or larger. If approved, it could take effect as early as next deer season.
