(Franklin County, IN) – Chris Huerkamp says he will run for a third term as Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney.

Huerkamp plans to make his bid official when the filing period for the May 5 Republican Primary Election opens on Wednesday, January 7.

He was first elected in 2018 with just under 80 percent of the vote after serving as Chief Deputy Prosecutor starting in 2012 under his predecessor, longtime Franklin County Prosecutor Melvin Wilhelm.

Prior to that, Huerkamp began his legal career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for five years under longtime Republican Hamilton County (Ohio) Prosecutor Joe Deters.

In total, he brings over 20 years of prosecutorial experience–starting from his final year of law school as an intern–with over 14 of those years spent in Franklin County.

He was reelected Franklin County Prosecutor in 2022.

“It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Franklin County for the last 14 years. I have always aimed to approach my duties with a sense of integrity, justice, and decency, while exercising the authority of the office in a responsible and effective manner, ” said Huerkamp. “Early into my tenure here, a wise and seasoned law enforcement official gave me a great definition of leadership: doing the right thing, at the right time, the right way, and for the right reasons. That made quite an impression upon me, and I strive to live up to it.”

In addition to managing a criminal caseload that consists of hundreds to thousands of pending cases at any given time, for the last seven years Huerkamp has been responsible for overseeing an
office with a total budget of several hundred thousand dollars, separate criminal and child support divisions, and a staff of 12 employees who live in every corner of Franklin County. Several have been recognized with statewide awards in the last few years.

Since he first took office in 2019, Huerkamp says crime in Franklin County has trended substantially downward by almost every measure; he has maintained fiscal responsibility, and has
consistently operated the Prosecutors Office under budget.

Huerkamp was raised on the west side of Cincinnati. He graduated from Roger Bacon High School, Xavier University, and the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

Huerkamp lives in Brookville Township with his wife, Katrina, a lifelong Franklin County resident, and their three children.
