(Greensburg, IN) — Larry Heger has announced plans to seek a seat on the Decatur County Council, filing to run for the District 4 position in the May 2026 Republican primary on the Republican ticket.
District 4 includes Adams, Clay, Clinton, Fugit and Saltcreek townships.
Heger is a lifelong Decatur County resident and taxpayer and a graduate of South Decatur High School. In announcing his candidacy, he said his decision follows several years of closely observing county government and community issues.
“For the past few years we have been spending the time and observing and learning about our local community and government,” Heger said. He noted that he has attended meetings of the County Commissioners, County Council, Area Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
Heger said his campaign is rooted in personal responsibility and civic involvement. “Don’t just complain about your community if you aren’t personally doing anything,” he said, describing a philosophy that he believes has guided his public service.
His professional background includes work in finance, agriculture and marketing. In 2025, Heger completed the Indiana version of the American Civil Planners Course through Purdue University.
Heger has served on a number of local boards and committees, including 4-H, Decatur County Rural Water and the Optimist organization. He is also a 26-year member of the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department. Currently, he serves on the steering committee updating the Decatur County Comprehensive Plan, which provides guidance for county planning and development over the next decade.
For the past two years, Heger has served as managing member of the Decatur County Citizens Stop Industrial Solar and Wind LLC. The group has raised more than $30,000 to cover legal fees related to opposing two proposed industrial solar projects in Decatur County and has worked alongside similar groups in other Indiana counties.
Heger emphasized that his decision to run is not tied to dissatisfaction with current officeholders. “I am NOT running because of any current candidates’ actions or voting record,” he said, adding that he believes the county currently has “great leaders.”
Instead, Heger said his motivation is a desire to take on a larger role in shaping local policy. “I am running because it is time to play a more significant role, if elected by my friends, family and neighbors,” he said.
Heger said he plans to meet with residents throughout District 4 in the coming months to hear their perspectives and discuss the future of Decatur County.
